Engineering Manager, Woodshed

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 8 years of experience with C++, large-scale distributed systems, and technical infrastructure.
  • Experience with distributed computing, big data analytics, cloud computing, multi-tenant cloud, and data analytics or artificial intelligence solutions applied to industry problems.

Preferred qualifications:

  • 10 years of experience with distributed compute environments, software development, big data analytics, cloud computing including virtualization, hosted services, multi tenant cloud infrastructures, storage systems or content delivery networks.

With technical and leadership expertise, you manage engineers across multiple teams and locations, a large product budget and oversee the deployment of large-scale projects across multiple sites internationally.

As part of Woodshed in Core Artificial Intelligence Foundations, you will work on a distributed system that is critical for machine learning infrastructure. Woodshed has been supporting most of the artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) workloads for Ads, Search, and YouTube for years. It is being expanded to support Gemini, GenMedia, Waymo, Workspace, Google Pay, and other Product Areas. The team is expanding to support machine learning storage. With your infrastructure experience, you will build the next generation of AI and ML systems for Google.

The Core team builds the technical foundation behind Google’s flagship products. We are owners and advocates for the underlying design elements, developer platforms, product components, and infrastructure at Google. These are the essential building blocks for excellent, safe, and coherent experiences for our users and drive the pace of innovation for every developer. We look across Google’s products to build central solutions, break down technical barriers and strengthen existing systems. As the Core team, we have a mandate and a unique opportunity to impact important technical decisions across the company.

The US base salary range for this full-time position is $207,000-$300,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Responsibilities

  • Manage a team of engineers focusing on Woodshed's multi-modal strategy.
  • Oversee Canon, a machine learning dataset lakehouse now backed by Woodshed.
  • Partner with GenMedia to power training for multimodal models.
  • Lead plans for the team alongside Woodshed's technical leadership, and collaborates with partner teams in DANI, core artificial intelligence foundations, and customers.
