Social Media and External Communications Manager

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience.
  • 10 years of experience in communications, public relations, or public affairs, with a focus on social media.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience working on political campaigns and other large company initiatives that require cross-functional collaboration.
  • Effective team player who can meet project deadlines with exceptional attention to detail.
  • Ability to think strategically and develop creative comms strategies that drive results.
  • Ability to quickly learn about various areas of public policy and the energy industry.
  • Strong project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet tight deadlines.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to craft compelling social media messaging and build relationships with key stakeholders.

About the job

As a member of the Global Communications & Public Affairs team, you will work cross-functionally to help communicate with journalists and other thought leaders; devise specific communications materials and campaigns; engage in face-to-face meetings with commentators and other opinion formers; and develop print and web-based material supporting these campaigns. We're looking for great communicators who can understand complex issues and explain them in person and also via well written, simple blog posts, FAQs, video scripts and more.

As a Social Media Manager managing our local data center campaign efforts, you will define and oversee the overall social media strategy to reach hyperlocal audiences across U.S. markets where Google operates data centers. In this role, you will manage an external social media agency of record to execute comprehensive monitoring, paid social, creative asset production, and community management initiatives across various social media platforms.

Working with Google’s Marketing and the Data Center Brand teams, you will serve as the primary advisor, responsible for reviewing social media content to ensure every touchpoint reinforces Google’s core data center narratives of community-focused outcomes, responsible execution, and economic opportunity. Working cross-functionally across Global Communications and Public Affairs and external partners, you will play a central role in demystifying data centers, cultivating local trust, and communicating Google’s long-term support of the communities we call home.

Individual pay is determined by factors including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.

US: $171000 - $247000 (USD) + 20% bonus target + equity + benefits

Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute a targeted social media strategy tailored to hyperlocal audiences in U.S. markets across various social media platforms, working closely with our agency of record and Google’s community development managers (CDMs).
  • Manage the external social media firm to deliver on landscape monitoring, audits, paid social campaigns, and community communications across channels.
  • Review and approve copy, visual assets, and engagement strategies to ensure high quality and brand consistency.
  • Ensure all social media activations rigorously align with Google’s narratives around innovation, affordability, environmental protection, and community benefits.
  • Establish KPIs and sentiment metrics with the agency, using real-time data to optimize social strategies and report insights to leadership.
