Software Engineer III, RCS Video

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent practical experience.
  • 2 years of experience with software development in Kotlin or other programming languages, or 1 year of experience with an advanced degree.
  • 2 years of experience with Android application development.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Master's degree or PhD in Computer Science or related technical fields.
  • Experience with real-time communication technologies, particularly WebRTC (including ICE, STUN, TURN, SDP, SRTP).
  • Experience with End-to-End Encryption with the knowledge of security protocols such as DTLS, MLS.
  • Experience building distributed systems and backend services and familiarity with gRPC and Protocol Buffers.
  • Familiarity with video/audio codecs and media processing.
  • Understanding of telecommunication standards like SIP and MSRP.

We are developing RCS Video Chat, a cross platform interoperable video calling solution built directly into the RCS standard, a service that will reach billions of users. This project aims to provide a seamless, secure (with End-to-End Encryption), and high-quality video chat experience integrated natively within messaging applications, starting with Google Messages.

This is a unique opportunity to work on a high-impact product, blending telecommunications standards with real-time communication technologies like WebRTC.


In this role, you will be instrumental in designing and implementing features for both 1:1 and group video calls, shaping how billions connect daily.
The Platforms and Devices team encompasses Google's various computing software platforms across environments (desktop, mobile, applications), as well as our first party devices and services that combine the best of Google AI, software, and hardware. Teams across this area research, design, and develop new technologies to make our user's interaction with computing faster and more seamless, building innovative experiences for our users around the world.Individual pay is determined by factors including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.

US: $147000 - $211000 (USD) + 15% bonus target + equity + benefits

Responsibilities

  • Deliver a cross-app Video calling solution over Rich Communication Services (RCS).
  • Collaborate closely with Product Managers, UX designers, and other engineering teams (touching client, backend, and protocol aspects) to define and deliver the product.
  • Utilize existing standards (like WebRTC, Messaging Layer Security (MLS) and RCS) and define new standards for RCS Video Chat.
  • Ensure the system is scalable, reliable, and secure, adhering to privacy best practices.
