About the job

Google's software engineers develop the next-generation technologies that change how billions of users connect, explore, and interact with information and one another. Our products need to handle information at massive scale, and extend well beyond web search. We're looking for engineers who bring fresh ideas from all areas, including information retrieval, distributed computing, large-scale system design, networking and data storage, security, artificial intelligence, natural language processing, UI design and mobile; the list goes on and is growing every day. As a software engineer, you will work on a specific project critical to Google’s needs with opportunities to switch teams and projects as you and our fast-paced business grow and evolve. We need our engineers to be versatile, display leadership qualities and be enthusiastic to take on new problems across the full-stack as we continue to push technology forward.

Digital Wellbeing’s mission is to empower everyone to build intentional, healthy relationships with technology.

Mobile devices are central to modern life, connecting us to information, loved ones, and essential services. However, as digital experiences become more immersive, users face growing challenges around digital distraction, cognitive overload, and compulsive engagement. Finding balance and staying present in daily life has become one of the defining consumer needs of our time.

Digital Wellbeing on Android is positioned at the operating system level to address these challenges across hundreds of millions of active users. Building on recent innovations - such as Pause Point to encourage mindful choices - our team is pioneering proactive, privacy-preserving tools that give users genuine agency over their attention and device habits.

Android is Google’s mobile operating system powering more than 3 billion devices worldwide. Android is about bringing computing to everyone in the world. We believe computing is a super power for good, enabling access to information, economic opportunity, productivity, connectivity between friends and family and more. We think everyone in the world should have access to the best computing has to offer. We provide the platform for original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and developers to build compelling computing devices (smartphones, tablets, TVs, wearables, etc) that run the best apps/services for everyone in the world.

Responsibilities

  • Develop intuitive, high-performance user experiences on a 1P app using Kotlin/Java and modern Android UI frameworks. Integrate on-device ML and generative AI solutions to deliver proactive and delight user experiences.
  • Translate complex behavioral, psychological, and human challenges into intuitive, highly robust, and privacy-preserving system-level engineering solutions.
  • Collaborate deeply with global partners across UX Design, UX Research, Data Science, and Privacy. Work closely with core Android teams in the US and the Kids and Families team to deliver cohesive, platform-wide experiences.
  • Lead rapid prototyping, framework experiments, and technical architecture reviews during early-stage product exploration, steering ideas smoothly from concept through global ecosystem-wide launch.
  • Write clean, efficient, maintainable, and well-tested code across the stack. Participate in design reviews, code reviews, and agile development processes to maintain engineering excellence.
