Minimum qualifications:

  • JD, LL.B., equivalent degree, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Admitted to the bar and in good standing or otherwise authorized to practice law (e.g., have registered in-house status) in the state in which the position is located.
  • 7 years of attorney-level experience in government, in-house, or at a law firm.
  • Successful candidate must be an Australian citizen, and will be required to obtain NV1 clearance under the Australian Government Protective Security Policy Framework (PSPF).

Preferred qualifications:

  • Strong private practice experience along with relevant in-house experience, with deep domain expertise in Australian public sector and systems integration (SI) contracting including DISP requirements, PSPF, IRAP, ISM, and HCF.
  • Ability to distill complex topics into easy-to-understand and digest issues.
  • Ability to thrive in an ambiguous environment by finding pragmatic and creative ways to support sales professionals.
  • Strong knowledge of defence procurement guidelines, PGPA Act and federal guidelines on government contracting.
  • Strong people management skills (managing customers and clients).

About the job

The Corporate Counsel will support the growing Google Public Sector cloud business, with a focus on transactional, counseling, and compliance issues.

As Corporate Counsel for Google Cloud in Australia, you will provide creative legal guidance for a high-performing Public Sector team. Navigating a dynamic regulatory landscape, you will partner with sales, engineering, and policy teams to influence how cloud services are delivered to government entities and help define legal standards for Australian data protection. As an integral part of the team, you will help define the legal standards that protect Australian data.

You should have strong experience supporting direct and indirect public sector transactions, developing agreement strategy, counseling sales executives, and managing regulations that apply to Australian government technology procurements. You will serve as lead lawyer on Google Public Sector channel/partner sales transactions (i.e., indirect transactions), partner programs, and related channel compliance issues in Australia.

Responsibilities

  • Act as lead counsel supporting a key Federal Government cloud program of work on all transactional, compliance, and counseling issues.
  • Provide strategic legal advice across a broad range of public sector matters, including Commonwealth, State, Territory, and local government technology procurements.
  • Draft, review, and negotiate complex cloud and professional services agreements with public sector customers, channel partners, and subcontractors.
  • Collaborate on emerging cloud regulations impacting cybersecurity and public sector cloud offerings in Australia.
  • Develop and manage internal compliance controls for public sector contract commitments, procurement rules, and applicable law.
