Database Engineering Manager, SAP Basis

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Statistics or equivalent practical experience.
  • 8 years of experience in database engineering or systems administration, with a focus on SAP Basis, SAP HANA, and SAP NetWeaver.
  • 4 years of experience in a people management or team leadership role.
  • 3 years of experience leading cross-functional technical projects and working with systems administration.

Preferred qualifications:

  • 5 years of experience with managing a team of database engineers.
  • Experience managing and scaling enterprise-level SAP environments (e.g., SAP RISE, complex on-premise deployments).
  • Experience with Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) practices, on-call rotations, and incident response management.
  • Demonstrated ability to navigate organizational ambiguity and lead complex, cross-functional technical initiatives.
  • Excellent communication skills with a proven track record of mentoring and developing teams of database or reliability engineers.

As a Database Engineer at Google, you design, implement and maintain our relational database systems for performance and reliability. You're responsible for tuning and configuring our databases as well as building tools and scripts to monitor, troubleshoot and automate our systems. You propose test plans and interface with external groups, developers and application owners to arrive at optimal solutions. Other areas of responsibility include designing and enhancing disaster recovery and backup systems. As you are writing automation for hundreds of machines, pages are serving up in real time, which means that the user has a seamless browsing experience.

Through your leadership, you use your technical expertise to lead projects that involve new technologies or that integrate multiple technologies and business critical systems. You bring value to any database system you are asked to directly administer, interface with, pilot or deploy, and you coordinate resources as you manage a team.

As a Database Engineering Manager specializing in SAP Basis, you will lead a Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) team responsible for the health, performance, and reliability of Alphabet's on-premise SAP environments and the SAP RISE service. You will manage a team of engineers, drive technical design reviews, and guide reliability-focused engineering projects. You will navigate organizational ambiguity with strong project management skills, ensure our finance and supply chain services scale efficiently and reliably.Google Cloud accelerates every organization’s ability to digitally transform its business and industry. Responsibilities

  • Manage, mentor, and grow a team of SAP Basis/SRE engineers responsible for the reliability of Alphabet's on-premise SAP systems and SAP RISE service.
  • Lead technical design reviews and drive reliability-focused engineering projects to improve system performance, scalability, and flexibility.
  • Oversee day-to-day operations, including participating in and managing the leads' on-call rotation to ensure high availability of critical services.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional partners across Finance, Supply Chain, and Cloud to navigate organizational ambiguity and deliver strategic project management.
  • Ensure the team aligns with Google's Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) best practices, driving continuous improvement in operational excellence.
