About the job

Like Google's own ambitions, the work of a Software Engineer goes beyond just Search. Software Engineering Managers have not only the technical expertise to take on and provide technical leadership to major projects, but also manage a team of Engineers. You not only optimize your own code but make sure Engineers are able to optimize theirs. As a Software Engineering Manager you manage your project goals, contribute to product strategy and help develop your team. Teams work all across the company, in areas such as information retrieval, artificial intelligence, natural language processing, distributed computing, large-scale system design, networking, security, data compression, user interface design; the list goes on and is growing every day. Operating with scale and speed, our exceptional software engineers are just getting started -- and as a manager, you guide the way.

With technical and leadership expertise, you manage engineers across multiple teams and locations, a large product budget and oversee the deployment of large-scale projects across multiple sites internationally.

In Google Search, we're reimagining what it means to search for information – any way and anywhere. To do that, we need to solve complex engineering challenges and expand our infrastructure, while maintaining a universally accessible and useful experience that people around the world rely on. In joining the Search team, you'll have an opportunity to make an impact on billions of people globally.

Responsibilities

  • Guide the technical direction to transition the core fabric of Search into an inherently multimodal platform, driving critical AI Mode (AIM) and AI Overviews (AIO) orchestration improvements.
  • Drive the organizational working methodology toward agent-driven architectures and spec-driven development. Have AI fluency and be prepared to discuss your knowledge of AI tools in the hiring process.
  • Manage complex integrations with sibling infrastructure teams, product teams, and downstream AI partners. Leverage the local Uber Tech lead (UTL)/Technical Lead (TL) presence in Bangalore to make effective architectural decisions and unblock your team.
  • Foster rigorous engineering practices. Advocate system reliability, precise capacity planning, and latency optimizations.
  • Hire, mentor, and sponsor a high-performing engineering team. Establish clear operational standards, support career development, and actively advocate for your team's technical visibility.
