Government Affairs and Public Policy Manager

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience.
  • 7 years of experience in policy analysis and campaigns, working on technology issues or the policy environments that surround them.
  • 7 years of experience working within the government, think tanks, public interest groups, technology industry groups, or corporate public policy organizations.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience with Internet and AI technologies and their relevant policy frameworks.
  • Understanding of the local policy and regulatory environment.
  • Ability to learn quickly about technical and regulatory issues and experience using AI tools as part of your work
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills.

About the job

As a member of Google’s Government Affairs and Public Policy team, you will lead our engagement with the Government in Malaysia and manage our public policy work in-country. You will be part of a global government affairs team, working across regions, product areas, and functions. You will combine creativity and intellectual excellence with the organizational skills to manage various campaigns, projects and initiatives. You will advocate for Google to bring external perspectives back into the company to inform our perception and direction. You will be passionate about the opportunity to shape the future of how we use and build technology for everyone.Google takes its responsibilities seriously, including engaging with government and other stakeholders on important public policy challenges. The Government Affairs and Public Policy (GAPP) team leads the company’s engagement with executive branch officials, legislators, regulators and third-parties in the formation of public policy. Working closely with Google leaders, GAPP seeks to identify key policy issues, listen carefully to others’ views and opinions, and distill and share the company’s perspective on those issues with external stakeholders. While we focus on challenges affecting the internet, our issue areas are increasingly broad and encompass many areas where public policy, business, and technology intersect.

Responsibilities

  • Represent Google externally in policy-making and with the Government in Malaysia.
  • Develop and execute government affairs and public policy strategies in Malaysia that align with Google's mission, objectives and principles.
  • Engage on a wide range of public policy issues around the Internet and Artificial Intelligence (AI), including AI governance, online safety, digital economy, content regulation, and competition.
  • Work with trade associations, industry partners, non-profit groups, academics and others to support policies and programs that support an open Internet and a bold and responsible approach to AI.
  • Ensure timely internal communications and information flow locally and with global colleagues, providing counsel to cross-functional teams and leadership.
