Director, Environmental, Health, and Safety Construction

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Health and Safety, Occupational Safety, Engineering, Construction Management, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 15 years of experience in construction safety, technical infrastructure delivery, or environmental health and safety program management.
  • Experience leading construction safety programs, managing regional/global teams, and directing capital project safety governance.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Advanced degree (e.g., Master’s degree or PhD) in Occupational Health and Safety, Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
  • Industry certifications (e.g., Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH)) or relevant international equivalents.
  • 20 years of experience leading EHS programs across global, large-scale, mission-critical infrastructure, industrial engineering, or hyperscale data center construction environments.
  • Experience scaling global safety operating models across complex partner/General Contractor networks and offsite construction delivery methods.
  • Domain expertise in high-hazard technical execution, electrical safety design standards, safety-in-design principles, and regulatory frameworks across multiple international jurisdictions.

Google's Data Center Compliance, Strategy, and Risk Management (CSRM) team is integrated across all stages of the data center lifecycle. CSRM is dedicated to protecting the people and assets of Google’s global critical infrastructure. By leveraging advanced security systems, dedicated guarding forces, and risk management and compliance frameworks, CSRM supports the entirety of Google Data Centers (GDC), enabling Google Cloud to reach a broader audience and inspire user trust.

As the Director of Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) Construction, you will define and execute the global outlook, strategy, and governance for health, safety, and environmental compliance across Google’s worldwide data center construction portfolio. Leading a high-impact organization of regional managers and program leads across the globe, you will drive our organizational commitment toward "Zero Harm". Serving as a strategic executive partner across Technical Infrastructure, Google Data Centers, and external General Contractor ecosystems, you will embed proactive safety cultures, ensure global legal and regulatory compliance, establish lifecycle risk-management frameworks, and implement innovative safety-in-transition programs at hyperscale.

Individual pay is determined by factors including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.

US: $256000 - $356000 (USD) + 30% bonus target + equity + benefits

Responsibilities

  • Define and direct the overarching multi-year direction, safety standards, and governance frameworks across all global data center new builds, expansions, and offsite delivery programs to achieve "Zero Harm".
  • Align cross-functional executive stakeholders across GDC, Technical Infrastructure, and General Contractor (GC) leadership to ensure full compliance with Google Owner's Requirements, project safety manuals, and international environmental regulations.
  • Build, scale, and inspire a global organization of regional EHS managers and technical program managers across Americas, EMEA, APAC, and Partnered Delivery. Foster a proactive culture of psychological safety, continuous learning, and leadership.
  • Oversee leading and lagging KPI frameworks, high-risk operational standards (e.g., Electrical Safety and Commissioning), incident response workflows, and predictive analytics to inform executive decision-making.
