Senior Software Engineering Manager, P2020 Rollouts

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience.
  • 8 years of experience building and developing large-scale infrastructure, or experience with compute technologies.
  • 5 years of experience in a technical leadership role.
  • 5 years of experience in a people management or team leadership role including experience managing other managers.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Master's degree or PhD in Computer Science, Operations Research, Mathematics, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Experience driving organizational and cultural change at scale.
  • Experience building software for a developer experience (DevEx) environment.
  • Experience collaborating with geographically distributed teams.
  • Experience with Continuous Integration (CI) or Continuous Deployment (CD) systems at scale.

About the job

P2020 Rollouts team owns the canonical CD solution used for continuous deployments of binaries, configs, footprint changes, Spanner schema changes, etc to production in a way that is easy, safe, fast, scalable, reliable and follows production best practices. The team is part of P2020 organization and Google Production Platform (GPP). Rollouts team is composed of dedicated Eng, PM, UX and T/PgM functions. Eng sites include DUB, ZRH, CAM. Candidates for this role are expected to work from the Cambridge office. This role is not open to 100% remote candidates.

As a Software Engineering Manager, you will lead a high-performing organization responsible for driving the design, development, and scaling of critical Continuous Deployment (CD) systems. You will manage a team of Software Engineers and Software Managers, steering technical direction, fostering organizational growth, and collaborating across organizational boundaries to deliver critical global impacts.

US: $262000 - $365000 (USD) + 25% bonus target + equity + benefits

Responsibilities

  • Lead and develop the Rollouts engineering organization at the Cambridge site directly and influence the wider Rollouts organization as a member of Rollouts Core Leadership team. Directly manage and coach engineers, building a culture of collaboration, delegation, and continuous learning.
  • Set technical direction across the organization. Guide and vet complex system architectures, review designs and implementations, ensuring high availability, scalability, and testing standards for all software.
  • Prioritize work, define key operational metrics, and manage resources to achieve long-term objectives. Ensure steady, incremental progress on highly complex technical issues, adapting execution plans dynamically.
  • Define and execute team priorities that align closely with broader organizational goals. Make critical roadmap decisions keeping team and partner organizations anchored to the broader business context.
  • Build and maintain strong partnerships across organizations. Align stakeholder expectations for cross-team technical decisions.
